I think I had to get older before I could enjoy painting in watercolor. I have always loved the medium, but for most of my life I was frustrated by it. My attempts were rushed, watery messes.
Finally, in 2019 I took a class at the community college (with Ruby Osorio, a wonderful teacher), and I learned to slow down and be patient! I found I could build a painting slowly with layer upon layer of color, rather than try to power through it in one sitting. It was so liberating.
Flirting in Paradise, 2026. Watercolor on paper, 22” x 15”. $1,200.
This image came about as I watched two Bird of Paradise flowers opening up a little each day, at the spot where I park my car. It seemed they were flirting with each other, or at least having a serious conversation. I approached the painting the way the flowers had opened, a little each day.
